Plastic Free July

Anyone else sick of all the unnecessary plastic being used?  New appliances are one of the worst offenders being wrapped in plastic and Styrofoam.  I understand that the Styrofoam protects the corners and appliance from getting scratched however most people will chuck all this stuff in land fill.

We recently got a new Fridge Freezer for our home and it came with all the wrapping.  This is what I did so that nothing would end up in land fill.  The soft plastic’s all went into one plastic bag and I tied this up and put it in the recycle bin. I understand that not every council offers this service so you can take your soft plastic’s to Coles and put them in these bins to be recycled.

Getting back to basics

These days our lives are over run with technology and appliances, every now and then it’s a good idea to ditch the tech and and live a simpler life, not only will you save energy on your power bills but you’ll be doing the planet a favour.

Let’s look at a few ways to switch out the appliances in your life, an easy switch you can do right now is swap the TV for a book, you can join a book club to give you the incentive to keep reading, don’t feel you must rush out and buy a book, save some trees and visit your local library and get books for free.  Resist the urge to reach for your kindle, give yourself the satisfaction of reading a book.

Plastics are not fantastic

It seems that the relationship we have with plastics just goes from bad to worse.  Now a major concern is the Microfibers found in clothes.  I don’t think people understand what a plague these are on the ocean and beaches.

When you put your clothes into your washing machine thousands of microfibers are washed off and travel through the sewage system and make it into our waterways.  It seems never ending with plastics from microbeads to plastic bags can anyone truly live a plastic free life?
