Living More Sustainably in 2018

Calendar with January 1st 2018 circled

2018 is fast approaching and with a new year there are lots of new years resolutions that will come, however how many of them will come to pass? We suggest to keep them realistic and achievable, the more outlandish the resolution the less likely it will succeed.

No matter what you want to achieve in 2018 living a more sustainable life would be a great item to add to your list. Here are some tips to help you keep your resolutions within reach.

Ditch Plastic!

Rather than going gun hoe and vowing to ditch all plastics (which would be very difficult to do all at once) choose 1 item and find an alternative, you can switch out plastic cling wrap for bee wax wraps, or replace plastic bags with reusable bags, or even switch your toothbrush for a bamboo one that can be composted once you have finished with it.

Once you have a good grip on what you have switched out you can incorporate this across other plastics that you are using. Let us know if you have a plastic that you’re unsure of an alternative and we can help you switch to a more planet friendly substitute.

Grow your Own Veggies

Growing your own organic produce is a great step to living more sustainably, not only that you’ll be living a healthier life style. You can grow just about anything these days in your back yard or balcony, even if you’re just growing a few herbs everyone needs to start somewhere.

Keep in mind no one starts out being a great gardener, gardening takes time and patience, gardening is not only good for your plate its good for the soul and managing stress! Unwinding after a hard day at work by pottering in the garden will help you connect with the earth and feel more grounded.

If you live in an apartment and don’t have a yard or balcony fear not as you can still grow your own produce at home. These amazing Microfarms from Babylon are the next generation in home appliances, they are easy to use and produce amazing organic produce all year round

Choose Renewables

Not everyone will be able to install solar in 2018, however before you decide that it’s not in your budget you should get a quote from our friends at solar choice. Who knows maybe 2018 is the year you’ll install solar and let the savings roll in.

If solar is not in your reach or if you are renting you can switch to an energy provider that sources its energy from renewable sources. We have solar and top up our energy from Power Shop and we are happy to report that Save Energy Save Money is 100% Green Power Accredited.

It will be a boost for the air that your breath and your fitness goals. Find a work life balance, you can simply request to work from home one day a week reducing your transport needs and allowing you to spend extra hours at home or in the garden!

Ensure your home is energy efficient this year, this means keeping your energy bills in check and lowering your carbon emissions at the same time. Again, don’t get overwhelmed with what needs to be done, choose just a few aspects that you can control.

Heating and Cooling your home is an energy drainer, look for ways you can save energy, small steps might include installing celling fans or caulking your windows and doors. Ensure you trap the air you want in your home and let the air that’s not needed escape.
